Mike,
The Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program (VVLP) brought Westy to
Columbus for a weekend a few years ago. It was great! We had MOH winners, etc.,
Woody Hayes and a bunch of other big-wigs. I met a State Senator -
Gene Watts who was stationed at the 509th after I left. A couple of lingys
an ARDF dude who's the current Governors Vet dude;who started the Military Forum on Compuserve in about 1980!!
So after dinner on Saturday nite, I go up to Westy with the book "MI a Photo History" and ask him to sign the page where he's coming out of a briefing at the 3rd RRU.He sez "u in ASA in VN?" Sez yes,
He stated that 90% of his hard & useful Intell came from us---not CIA or STATE from ASA!!!!!
I said I knew, I was in COMMO and used to send that shit to SSO SAIGON
for him to read.
He was a real class act, talked about how our unit briefed him 3 times
a week, etc. One of the briefer's was a drinkin buddy of mine from OKI.
Westy said he used to love to visit our sites and watch the 05's
intercept that shit live , then watch us COMMO guys send the shit out to the Consumer's
Hell he talked about the 8th in PhuBai and Udorn and a lot of other sites.
He said we saved a shitload of lives with the COMINT we provided!!
My wife was really impressed; she said I knew ur crazy friends from ASA
& NSA talked shit, but I really didn't know how important it was. She had
always wanted to meet Woody and Westy introduced her.
