Dear Mr. Slusher:

This is in response to your electronic mail request of January 20, 1998. You requested information from the available casualty records for SGT Robert Earl Dew, a casualty of the Vietnam conflict.

Computerized records on casualties from the Vietnam conflict have been transferred to the National Archives from the Office of the Secretary of Defense. One of the databases in the Center for Electronic Records is known as the [Southeast Asia] Combat Area Casualties Current File (CACCF). Records are current as of November 1996. This is the most recent version of the CACCF currently processed into our holdings. This file includes final records for persons who died as a result of a hostile or non-hostile occurrence in the Southeast Asia Combat Area, including those who died while missing or captured. In response to your request, following is information from the full, final record of SGT Dew from the CACCF.

The Center for Electronic Records also has custody of a database that was transferred to the National Archives from the [U.S. Army] Adjutants General's Center (TAGCEN). The database was intended to incorporate information on casualties (deaths and wounds) suffered by U.S. Army personnel and their dependents, worldwide, during the period 1961-81. We also include information from the record for SGT Dew.

For further information about the military career of SGT Dew, you may consider obtaining a copy of his military personnel files. Submit a *Request Pertaining to Military Records* (SF-180) to the National Military Personnel Records Center, 9700 Page Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63132. Please let me know whether you would like me to send you a copy of this form and/or copies of the printout pages with the CACCF and TAGCEN records for SGT Dew.

I hope this information is useful.

From Tony Lopez:
Basic was at Ft. Leonard Wood from Sep. thru Oct. '69 and then on to 'ditty bopper' school at Ft. Devens. I was with the 330th RRC in Nha Trang from Jun. '70 thru Jun. '71. Some of the O5H gang at Nha Trang were Charlie Eads, Jim Morehead, Phil Baker, Phil Johnson, Wayne Tilbrook, Bernie Tomassetti, and George Pilling. We were there when Bob Dew was killed and five or six NG's were wounded. Can't belive that they list his casualty as 'misadventure - possibly friendly fire' - I still have a piece of the 107 shrapnel to prove it wasn't 'friendly'!!
