I came to Berlin in July 1946. The 3110th Signal Service Bn was housed in a group of apartments on Sundgauer Strasse right next to the S-bahn station. The complex was fenced in with a guard at the entrance. They were renovating the buildings at McNair Barracks, Which I believe we only knew as ‘Telefunken’ at that time. When the buildings were ready the 3110th moved into the first building on the left as you passed through the Goerzallee gate. During the airlift of 48-49 I pulled 8 hour shifts manning a radio at the top of the Funkturm. During the day an elevator operator took us to the top, but the midnight shift had to walk up or down all 767 steps. I was just praying that one of those airlift planes would not crash into the Funkturm. I must say, I really enjoyed my tour of duty there in Berlin.
